Now in its second year, the NSF-funded ALADDIN Center for ALgorithm ADaption, Dissemination and IntegratioN aims to promote technology transfer from theory to practice and explore synergistic research areas between application domains and theory. We believe aspects of ALADDIN's research projects and methodology, by their very nature, would be attractive to undergraduate students and, indeed, could be introduced into the undergraduate computer science curriculum.

We are planning a small workshop this summer for college faculty and students to explore some of these areas and see how they might fit into the undergraduate curriculum. Currently, we anticipate a three-day workshop at Carnegie Mellon during the last week of June (June 26-28, 2003). Topics resulting from our PROBEs (PROBlem-oriented Explorations) that we plan to cover include: CAPTCHA (a Completely Automatic Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart, or how to keep bots out of chat rooms), Privacy in DATA (algorithms and protocols that preserve privacy while allowing critical data collection), Meshing (with applications to computer graphics and vision, air and blood flow and structural simulations), and Graph Partitioning (with applications to vision and learning). In addition, Guy Blelloch plans to give a short course based on his Algorithms in the Real World course. Other sessions may include discussions with Steven Rudich about his course, Great Theoretical Ideas in Computer Science, and with members of our very active Women@SCS student organization.
